Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance Program

The federal Canadian government has unrolled its plan to help small businesses and their rental obligations:

  • It is designed to help small businesses cover their rents for April, May and June.
  • This assistance is being rolled out in collaboration with the provinces.
  • We will provide updates as more information is made available, such as where and how to apply, restrictions, etc.

Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)

The federal government has loosened its restrictions on access to the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA)

  • This program is aimed at operational costs and other immediate needs.
  • It is targeted at small and medium sized businesses
  • It offers government-guaranteed loans of up to $40,000 to cover the costs of keeping businesses alive during the Covid-10 pandemic.
  • The federal government is expanding the eligibility criteria for qualifying for this program.
  • Eligible companies must have paid between $20,000 and $1.5 million in total payroll in 2019.

BONUS:

  • If the business who takes the CEBA loan are able to repay it by the end of 2022, $10,000 of that loan will be forgiven.

When the application process is made public, we will post the information here.

Environmental Initiatives

At Harbour Centre, we have worked hard to increase the building’s efficiency, use fewer resources, and contribute to the greening of Victoria’s built environment. We constructed the garden terrace in 2011, which has contributed to Victoria’s green roof system, and in 2012 we utilized several incentives to update the lighting system. The results of the latter improvements were startling: In a sample gathered for an energy audit in 2014, Harbour Centre had the lowest energy use intensity among similar buildings. In fact, its energy intensity was 37% lower. We have also decreased water usage by 33%, from 2010 to 2014.  A 2012 BC Hydro report estimated that, because of the improvements we made to the lighting system, we might be saving our clients as much as $42,000 a year in costs because of the lighting upgrades, alone.

We are proud to say that these efforts have resulted in the prestigious BOMA BESt® Level 2 designation. This was the result of an ongoing and concerted effort to ‘go green’ and achieve management excellence in environmental and energy performance.
